Disabled driver assessment and retraining
Driving is an activity of daily living that requires a combination of various sensory, motor and perceptual abilities that enable individuals to skilfully execute vehicle control behaviours in complex situations. Occupational Therapists are health professionals who aim to improve the functional capacities of individuals whose abilities have been affected by developmental, disease, physical, emotional, psychological or social trauma. They are recognized as skilled in assessing driving skills and providing intervention aimed at optimizing an individual's independence in this important area. This paper discusses the process and content of driver assessments and retraining programmes for people with functional limitations and highlights the potential outcomes which can facilitate an individual's re/integration into independent community mobility.
