A description of the function of the Sperry Collision Avoidance System is presented. The system consists of a console displaying a Sperry Mk 12 or Mk 16 radar and a small digital computer with inputs from a speed log and gyrocompass. The article discusses the independent operation of the system, or its integration into a total bridge system. Its advantages are noted, making its disadvantages apparent.
