Pavement design life: discussion paper

The use of a twenty year design life is common practice for road pavements in Western Australia. In 1992, a discussion paper was prepared for Main Roads WA on the choice of design life for pavement thickness design purposes. The study used discounted present worth technique to examine the economic implications of adopting a longer design life. Both urban and rural highways were considered. For the cases studied, the results suggest that the optimum design life, in terms of lowest equivalent annual cost, is significantly greater than the twenty years currently used.
