CLASSIFICATION OF UNDISTURBED COHESIVE SOILS ACCORDING TO THEIR DENSITY

ALTHOUGH THE VOID RATIO IS CLOSELY RELATED TO THE STRENGTH AND DEFORMATION PROPERTIES OF SOIL, ITS USE AS A CRITERION FOR CLASSIFICATION IS RENDERED DIFFICULT BY THE LACK OF A SUITABLE STANDARD VALUE. THE STATISTICAL GROUPING OF THE DISTRIBUTIONS, DETERMINED IN TERMS OF THE INDEX OF PLASTICITY, APPEARS TO OFFER A PRACTICABLE APPROACH. FOR THIS PURPOSE DATA OF ABOUT 2000 SAMPLES OBTAINED FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF HUNGARY HAVE BEEN PROCESSED. VALUES OF THE UNDISTURBED VOID RATIO MAY BE GROUPED ACCORDING TO FREQUENCY LIMITS COMPUTED ON THE BASIS OF STATISTICAL DATA, WHICH IN TURN MAY BE USED TO ESTABLISH DENSITY CATEGORIES. /AUTHOR/
