Field applications of stress laminated timber decks in NSW

In 1990, the Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales (RTA), the Forestry Commission of NSW, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and several industry organisations, formed a joint venture group to promote the research and development of stress laminated timber (SLT) technology in NSW. As a result of their efforts, a major development program has been established. In addition to the ongoing research and development, a number of significant prototype SLT applications have been constructed in NSW. This paper presents three of these applications with particular emphasis on the construction methodology. Additional details on these bridges is available in previous documentation. As well, other accompanying papers in these proceedings expand on the basis for the SLT design. Therefore, this paper does not provide details on the design and/or construction. Instead, the paper is designed to demonstrate the flexibility of the SLT concept to meet varied field applications and promote the technology as a viable alternative for bridge construction.
