This paper is divided into two parts. Part A discusses past operating statistics and financial performance of rail freight systems in Australia and reviews some recent developments designed to achieve profitability in that sector of the rail industry. Part A also highlights the increasing focus on customer service improvements; a shift towards the use of increased train sizes; the increasing use of unit trains for intermodal container traffic; improvements in track standards through innovative technology; improvements in wagon and locomotive performance; and improvements in intermodal terminal operations. Part B deals with the past performance of the small freight rail system in Tasmania, AN TASRAIL, and its future prospects.
