NEW STRESS AND STRAIN GAGES FOR MEASUREMENTS IN STABILIZED SOIL PAVEMENTS

THE REPORT DESCRIBES THE DESIGN, CALIBRATION, AND PERFORMANCE OF NEW STRESS AND STRAIN GAGES FOR USE IN STABILIZED SOIL PAVEMENTS. THE GAGES WERE DESIGNED TO MEASURE VERTICAL COMPRESSIVE STRESS AT THE TOP OF THE SUBGRADE AND RADIAL STRAIN AT THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CEMENT STABILIZED LAYER OF PROTOTYPE PAVEMENTS. THE STRESS GAGE AHD AN ALUMINUM CASING WITH A FULL-BRIDGE FOIL STRAIN GAGE CEMENTED TO THE DIAPHRAGM. THE STRAIN GAGE USED TWO ALUMINUM END PLATES AS REFERENCE POINTS AND A SINGLE LINEAR VARIABLE DIFFERENTIAL TRANSFORMER FOR MEASURING CHANGE IN SPACING. THE STRESS GAGE WAS CALIBRATED IN LABORATORY SOIL COMPACTED AND STRESSED TO CONDITIONS SIMILAR TO THOSE EXPERIENCED IN THE FIELD. THE STRAIN GAGE WAS CALIBRATED BY AN ADJUSTABLE MICROMETER MOUNT. TYPICAL FIELD MEASUREMENT RESULTS ARE PRESENTED. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT THE GAGES WILL HAVE APPLICATION IN FUTURE FIELD TEST PROGRAMS. /AUTHOR/
