THE IMPORTANCE OF SOIL GENESIS IN THE ENGINEERING CLASSIFICATION OF GHANA SOILS

STUDIES ON TROPICALLY WEATHERED SOILS HAVE REVEALED THAT DUE TO THEIR MODE OF FORMATION, THE PHYSICO- CHEMICAL AND ENGINEERING PROPERTIES DIFFER CONSIDERABLY FROM SOILS OF SIMILAR TEXTURE DEVELOPED UNDER TEMPERATE CLIMATES. CONSEQUENTLY HIGHWAY AND AIRFIELD SOIL CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS IN USE IN THE TEMPERATE COUNTRIES HAVE NOT FOUND USEFUL APPLICATION IN MANY TROPICAL COUNTRIES. NUMEROUS HIGHWAY FAILURES IN SPITE OF STRICT ADHERENCE TO A. S. T. M. GRADING AND PLASTICITY SPECIFICATION, HAVE CONFIRMED THE INAPPLICABILITY OF THE PRESENT TEMPERATE ZONE CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS. IN THIS PAPER AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ENGINEERING SOIL CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM FOR THE TROPICALLY WEATHERED SOILS OF GHANA. THE RESULTS OF THIS STUDY HAVE REVEALED THAT THE SOIL-FORMING FACTORS CONSIDERABLY INFLUENCE THE DISTRIBUTION OF PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES IN GHANA SOILS. THE PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES ARE THE FUNCTION OF THE CLIMATIC- VEGETATIONAL CONDITIONS (WEATHERING SYSTEMS) AND OF CLAY-PARTICLE COATINGS. APPROXIMATE RANGES OF THE PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES WERE ESTABLISHED FOR EACH GENETIC SOIL GROUP ON THE BASIS OF THE CLAY CONENT AND THE OTHER SOIL FORMING FACTORS. SIMILAR CONCLUSIONS HAVE BEEN REACHED ON THE ENGINEERING PROPERTIES. /TRRL/
