LATERITES IN WEST MALAYSIA AND NORTHERN NIGERIA

DESCRIPTIONS, DISTRIBUTIONS, FORMATIONS AND PROPERTIES OF LATERITES IN NORTHERN NIGERIA AND WEST MALAYSIA ARE GIVEN. A COMPARISON OF LATERITES IN THESE AREAS AND OF SOME FROM OTHER AREAS IN AFRICA HAS SHOWN THAT ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE FORMED IN DIFFERENT WAYS AND OCCUR OVERLYING A WIDE VARIETY OF ROCKS, THEIR ENGINEERING PROPERTIES IN MANY RESPECTS ARE SIMILAR. FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION PURPOSES THEY SELDOM MAKE SATISFACTORY MATERIALS FOR ROAD BASES BECAUSE OF THE PLASTIC NATURE OF THE FINE SOIL FRACTION; THIS APPLIES PARTICULARLY TO THE CONCRETIONARY NODULAR LATERITE OF WEST MALAYSIA. THE ADDITION OF SMALL PROPORTIONS OF CEMENT OR LIME, HOWEVER, GENERALLY IMPROVES THE MATERIAL TO THE REQUIRED STANDARD. /TRRL/
