CONTRIBUTION OF PETROGRAPHY TO THE STUDY OF THE PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF ROCKS /IN FRENCH/

FROM THE PERTROGRAPHIC STUDY OF ROCKS WHICH LEADS TO THE DETERMINATION OF THE RELATIVE PROPORTIONS OF MINERALS, IT IS POSSIBLE TO CALCULATE THE ELASTIC CONSTANTS OF THE IDEAL ROCK, IF THE ELASTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF ITS CONSTITUENTS ARE KNOWN. THESE CALCULATIONS CAN BE ACCURATE OR APPROXIMATE. THE COMPARISON BETWEEN THE CALCULATED VALUES OF IDEAL ROCK AND THE MEASURED VALUES OF REAL ROCK SHOWS DIFFERENCES DUE TO THE STATE OF WEATHERING OF THE MINERALS AND DISCONTINUITIES OF THE MEDIUM. A QUALITY INDEX FOR ROCKS IS DEFINED WHICH IS RELATED TO THEIR ELASTIC AND MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS. THE RAPID DETERMINATION OF THIS QUALITY INDEX PROVIDES VALUABLE INFORMATION TO GEOLOGISTS AND ROCK MECHANICS ENGINEERS, WHO USUALLY ONLY HAVE AT THEIR DISPOSAL QUALITATIVE DATA WHICH ARE DIFFICULT TO INTERPRET. /TRRL/
