A slag pavement construction trial - results and performance

This paper considers Blast Furnace Slag as a road pavement construction material, examining previous Trial Pavement performance and presents the results of a Trial Pavement constructed by Lake Macquarie City Council in 1989. The paper presents a method of construction for Blast Furnace Slag pavements similar to that used in building natural gravel or crushed rock pavements. Back analysis of Benkelman Beam deflection bowls over a three year period produced results consistent with the previous trials showing the trend of the material modulus to gain strength with time and exhibiting the behaviour of a lightly bound material. The trial showed that considerable savings can be gained by adopting a construction method similar to that used for unbound materials rather than the 'Flooding Technique' commonly in practice in the Newcastle area.
