Drugs and driving

There is limited understanding of the role of drugs in the causation of traffic collisions. Large numbers of people drive after ingesting drugs from all sources. The four major problem areas for law enforcement are: (1) Proof that a drug has been consumed; (2) Quantitative estimation of the drug; (3) Could this amount of drug produce driving impairment? (4) Could this have lead to the crash? To study intoxication and impairment requires a test protocol that is related to driving skill and which returns repeatable, meaningful results with sufficient specificity. The development of protocols for assessing intoxication in drivers will be discussed.
