EUROPEAN EXPERIENCE WITH PLANNING FOR RECREATIONAL TRAFFIC

THE AUTHORS DISCUSS THEMES STUDIED AT THE OTA STUDY WEEK HELD IN BRUSSELS (SEPTEMBER 18-22, 1972); THESE INCLUDED PAPERS ON PLANNING FOR RECREATIONAL TRAFFIC SUBMITTED BY DELEGATES FROM AUSTRIA, BRITAIN, DENMARK, FRANCE, GERMANY, NETHERLANDS, SWITZERLAND AND THE UNITED STATES. IT WAS GENERALLY CONCLUDED THAT PLANNING FOR RECREATIONAL TRAFFIC MUST INCLUDE HIGHWAY DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT AND INFORMATION SERVICES AND SOCIAL-POLICY. PARTICULAR ASPECTS DISCUSSED INCLUDE: MORE SOPHISTICATED DESIGN CRITERIA FOR HIGHWAYS TO COPE WITH EXCESSIVE VOLUMES OF TRAFFIC; THE USE OF BY-PASS ROUTES AND DIVERSIONS; STAGGERING OF HOLIDAY PERIODS IN SCHOOLS, AND DEVELOPMENT OF INFORMATION SERVICES TO DRIVERS. /TRRL/
