HIGHWAY FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION -SOME RECENT TRENDS

A BRIEF HISTORY IS GIVEN OF THE RECENT DEVELOPMENT OF THE NATIONAL NETWORK OF HEAVY DUTY ROADS IN SOUTH AFRICA AND THE USE OF LARGE FREIGHT VEHICLES, WHICH RESULTED MAINLY FROM INCREASING AGRICULTURAL TRANSPORT REQUIREMENTS AND THE GROWTH OF THE MANUFACTURING AND MINING INDUSTRIES. REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE NEED FOR THE REGULAR TRAINING OF HEAVY VEHICLE DRIVERS, AND TO THE USE OF THE TACHOGRAPH FOR RECORDING VEHICLE, FREIGHT, AND OPERATIONAL DATA.
