Solar Parking Requirements

Cities can address the need for peak-power demand by requiring that parking spaces be covered with solar panels. Such a requirement is similar to the minimum parking space standards for new buildings; developers are required to address the additional demand generated by new construction, in this case, the need for power. Since the parking lots provide large areas with unobstructed solar access, they can generate power more efficiently than solar panels located on houses. Such solar installations are much less costly to install than power plants and can be distributed throughout the city, lowering the stresses on distribution systems. They also represent an efficient way to provide charging stations for electric vehicles.
