A subjective evaluation of motorcycle noise

In Japan, automobile noise is a major source of noise pollution. In order to reduce noise pollution caused by automobiles this noise, which is generally evaluated by A-weighted sound pressure levels (SPL), is strictly regulated by law. However, A-weighted SPL are not always appropriate for the evaluation of annoyance, including perceived loudness, caused by all types of noise. It is therefore important to find out what physical values correspond to subjective evaluations in order to reduce annoyance caused by automobile noise. This paper describes an analysis of the results from subjective evaluations of various types of motorcycle noise. The relationship between subjective evaluations and several physical values was investigated.
