Acoustic survey and statistical analysis of Messina noise levels

In many Italian towns an acoustic mapping survey of the whole Communal area, or of the main part of it, has been fulfilled in recent years. Messina, one of the most important towns of Sicily, is affected by one noise source which is clearly prevailing: road traffic. In addition to the normal traffic of the town, there is the transit traffic from and to the quay connecting Sicily with continental Italy. Consequently, Messina is one of the most noisy towns of Italy. The aim of this paper is to analyze the results of an acoustic survey of Messina and to consider the temporal distribution of the outdoor noise levels in some characteristic location points during four time intervals of day and night. The data of Messina are compared with those of other Italian towns with different characteristics previously analyzed by the authors.
