Management of quality in a road authority

In its role as a supplier, Main Roads has devised a holistic framework for the management of quality which integrates all activity areas to improve coordination. An implementation strategy has also been developed which allows for a highly participative approach, increasing the sense of ownership and understanding of Quality Management practices. The approach to Quality Management adopted within Main Roads will provide a basis for ongoing improvement. The Quality Management requirements Main Roads is placing on its suppliers serve to increase the responsibility of the supplier to verify that the product is correct. This lessens the detection effort previously provided by Main Roads and focuses the supplier on preventing non conforming product, with mutual benefits resulting. The experience of Main Roads with Quality Management should provide useful insight to those contemplating a similar initiative, especially for large engineering oriented organisations such as occurs in the realm of Local Government.
