THE CHARACTERISTICS, COMPONENTS, AND MODULES OF SOME EXISTING INTERREGIONAL MODELS ARE EXAMINED; IMPORTANT DESIGN FEATURES---DISTINCTION BETWEEN PRIVATE AND PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, DISTINCTION BETWEEN PASSENGER AND FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION, ELASTICITY OF VARIABLES IN THE REAL WORLD, IENTIFICATION OF MODEL VIEWPOINT, POLITICAL FACTORS, SIMULATION VERSUS OPTIMIZATION, AND FULL VERSUS PARTIAL EQUILIBRIUM--- ARE DISCUSSED BRIEFLY. DIFFERENCES IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE MODELS ARE TREATED AT LENGTH, AND CERTAIN PROBLEMS IN MODELLING ARE NOTED.
