Study of injury mechanisms of the Mt Tamborine coach crash, September 25, 1990

This paper describes a study of injuries to occupants in a fatal bus crash. On September 25, 1990 a tourist coach left the road at Mt Tamborine, Queensland. The coach was unable to complete a left hand turn into a side road and rolled down an embankment. There were 11 killed and 38 injured. This study involved a comprehensive interior inspection of the coach and an analysis of the injury mechanisms. The potential for occupant restraint systems and other occupant protection measures to have minimised the effects of this crash is discussed. Issues identified in the study were the prevalence of thoracic injuries to the elderly passengers and the potential benefits of using lap/sash seat belts to restrain occupants compared to use of the "seat back passive restraint" approach as specified in ECE80 (a).
