SIMULATION OF TRAFFIC CHARACTERISTICS ON SIGNAL-CONTROLLED ROAD NETWORKS

THE CALCULATION PROGRAM "QUWAIT" DESCRIBED IN THIS ARTICLE MAKES POSSIBLE THE CALCULATION OF PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS OF QUEUEING LENGTHS AND WAITING TIMES AT ALL SIGNALS OF A ROAD NETWORK. THE GEOMETRIC LAYOUT OF THE ROAD NETWORK, THE MEAN LOADS OF TRAFFIC STREAMS ARRIVING FROM OUTSIDE, THE PROBABILITY OF DIVERGING VEHICLES AND THE SIGNAL PROGRAMS ARE GIVEN. VEHICLES COMING FROM OUTSIDE ARE ASSUMED TO BE BINOMIALLY DISTRIBUTED, WHILE DISTRIBUTION OF VEHICLES ARRIVING AT THE INNER SIGNALS OF THE NETWORK IS CALCULATED. BINOMIAL DISTRIBUTIONS ARE USED INSTEAD OF MEAN VALUES SO THAT RANDOM FLUCTUATIONS IN TRAFFIC ARE INCLUDED, SO THAT THEIR CONSEQUENCES CAN BE JUDGED. /TRRL/
