Bitumen stabilisation of the exterior part of sandstone pavements
The infiltration of water into sandstone pavement has been identified as the cause of many problems. Methods have been proposed to retard the infiltration of water and to prevent some of the more damaging effects of such infiltration. One proposed solution has been the bitumen stabilisation of the outer part of the sandstone base. While early trials suggested that there were some difficulties with this approach, the long term results and recent trials suggest that the method does work (A).
