SOIL-PILE INTERACTION UNDER LATERAL LOADING

FIELD TESTS WERE PERFORMED TO STUDY THE LATERAL LOAD-DISPLACEMENT CHARACTERISTICS OF NATURAL SOIL DEPOSITS AND TO ASSOCIATE THESE CHARACTERISTICS WITH THE BEHAVIOUR OF LATERALLY LOADED PILES. THREE SOIL CONDITIONS WERE CONSIDERED, INCLUDING BAY MUD WITH A DESICCATED CRUST IN ITS NATURAL DRY STATE, BAY MUD SUBMERGED WITHIN IN THE AREA OF TESTING, AND A HYDRAULIC FILL OF GRANULAR MATERIAL. TESTS WERE PERFORMED AT EACH OF THE THREE TEST SITES WITH A SEGMENTAL PILE WHICH WAS DEVELOPED TO ENABLE THE PERFORMANCE OF HORIZONTAL LOAD TESTS AT VARIOUS DEPTHS IN UNDISTURBED SOIL DEPOSITS. IN ADDITION, LATERAL LOAD TESTS ON FULL-SCALE FLEXIBLE PILES WERE PERFORMED AT EACH TEST SITE. PUBLISHED SOIL INFORMATION, MEASURED SOIL PROPERTIES, THEORETICAL INFORMATION, AND RESULTS OF THE SEGMENTAL PILE TESTS WERE COMPARED AND COMBINED TO ESTABLISH REPRESENTATIVE LATERAL LOAD-DISPLACEMENT RELATIONSHIPS FOR THE SOIL AT ANY DEPTH AT THE THREE SITES. THE PROCEDURE OF DETERMINING THESE RELATIONSHIPS WERE ESTABLISHED IN SUCH A MANNER THAT THEY CAN BE APPLIED TO OTHER SOIL DEPOSITS. PROVISIONS WERE MADE TO ACCOUNT FOR THE NON-LINEARITY OF THE SOIL RESPONSE AND THE VARIATION OF SOIL PROPERTIES WITH DEPTH IN EACH DEPOSIT. THEORETICAL PREDICTIONS OF THE RESPONSE OF LATERALLY LOADED PILES WERE MADE USING THESE RELATIONSHIPS, AND THE RESULTS COMPARED FAVORABLE WITH DATA OBTAINED DURING THE LATERAL LOAD TESTS ON PILES. /RRL(A)/
