IMPROVED STRANGTH OF CLAY LAYER BY MEANS OF SAND-DRAIN FOUNDATION

SUBSURFACE TESTS WERE CONDUCTED AT VARIOUS STAGES OF CONSTRUCTION OF AN EMBANKMENT ON A SAND-DRAINED STRATUM OF HOMOGENEOUS MARINE CLAY. RESULTS FOR UNDI>TURBED SAMPLES OF THE CLAY SHOWED APPROXIMATE LINEARITY BETWEEN WATER CONTENT AND LOG UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH. UNCONFINED-COMPRESSION TESTS ON SAMPLES TAKEN AFTER CONSTRUCTION SHOWED FAILURE AT LARGER STRAINS, COMPARED WITH TESTS BEFORE INSTALLATION OF THE SAND DRAINS. /RRL/AUTHOR/
