A SURVEY OF ARTERIAL ROADS WITH PEAT SUBGRADES

ABOUT 6,000 MILES OR ONE-EIGTH OF THE ROAD NETWORK IN IRELAND IS CONSTRUCTED OVER PEAT. INFORMATION WAS LACKING, HOWEVER, ON HOW MUCH OF THIS MILEAGE OCCURS ON HEAVILY TRAFFICKED ROUTES, WHERE PEAT SUBGRADES WOULD PRESENT MAJOR DIFFICULTIES. A SURVEY HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE THE MILEAGE OF ARTERIAL ROADS WITH PEAT SUBGRADES ON WHICH IMPROVEMENT SCHEMES WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN THE FUTURE, WITH THE OBJECT OF BRINGING INTO PERSPECTIVE THE SCOPE OF THE PROBLEM POSED BY PEAT SUBGRADES IN IRELAND. /RRL/FORAS/
