MOTORWAY CONSTRUCTION IN DIFFICULT SUBSOIL CONDITIONS /IN GERMAN/

BAD SUBSOIL CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ZURICH-CHUR SWISS NATIONAL ROAD ARE DESCRIBED: THE CONSTRUCTION METHOD USED ON THE FIRST SECTION - EXCHANGING OF THE SOIL TO A DEPTH OF 3M - RESULTED IN A ROAD WHICH WAS VIRTUALLY FLOATING ON LAKE LOAM AND WHICH HAS SINCE SUBSIDED. A CHEAPER METHOD WOULD BE TO CONSTRUCT A 40 CM THICK CEMENT- STABILIZED LAYER WHICH COULD COPE WITH TRAFFIC LOADS UP TO 50 TONS. /FG/RRL/
