FIFTEEN YEARS OF CEMENT-STABILIZED AND LEAN CONCRETE BASES IN GREAT BRITAIN

CEMENT-STABILIZED AND LEAN CONCRETE BASES WERE FIRST USED EXTENSIVELY IN GREAT BRITAIN ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO, ALTHOUGH EXPERIMENTAL WORK BEGAN MUCH EARLIER THAN THIS. CRITERIA FOR THE PROPERTIES OF SOILS, GRAVELS AND ROCKS, INCLUDING GRADING LIMITS AND OTHER PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS REQUIRED FOR SUCCESSFUL STABILIZATION, HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED BY EXPERIENCE, LABORATORY RESEARCH AND FULL -SCALEROAD TESTS. MIX DETAILS FOR LEAN CONCRETE HAVE BEEN SIMILARLY ESTABLISHED. CURRENT SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR BOTH CEMENT STABILIZED AND LEAN CONCRETE BASES ARE SUMMARIZED AND EXPLAINED. AN INNOVATION HAS BEEN THE USE OF MACHINES WITH AUTOMATIC GUIDING AND LEVELING DEVICES FOR LAYING BOTH LEAN CONCRETE AND CEMENT-STABILIZED MATERIAL. A STUDY HAS BEEN MADE OF THE CONDITION OF MORE THAN 100 ROADS, INCLUDING MOTORWAYS, WITH CEMENT-STABILIZED OR LEAN CONCRETE BASES, MOST OF WHICH ARE BETWEEN 5 AND 8 YEARS OLD AND HAVE SUCCESSFULLY CARRIED BETWEEN 1 AND 8 MILLION COMMERCIAL VEHICLES. SOME ROADS ARE 10 OR 15 YEARS OLD AND, TO DATE, THE TOTAL TRAFFIC HAS REACHED 18 MILLION COMMERCIAL VEHICLES. THE GENERAL PERFORMANCE OF THESE ROADS HAS BEEN EXCELLENT. /RRL/A/
