Bicycles and pedestrians in local traffic areas
A study of Victorian road accidents for the period 1980-84 has highlighted the problems for young unprotected road users in the local street system, especially whilst on the school trip. Because of the dispersed nature of these accidents it is clear that the installation of local area traffic management (LATM) offers one of the most effective accident countermeasures. To ensure that LATM schemes do not create difficulties, especially for unprotected road users, a number of design details should be followed. These are described in the paper. When combined with a local road safety education package, LATM can create a safe routes to school project. Such projects have great benefit for use in Australian cities (a).
