EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION WITHOUT MOISTURE-DENSITY CONTROL

INFORMATION IS OBTAINED AS TO THE EVENTUAL CONDITION OF FILLS AND CUTS CONSTRUCTED IN ARID REGIONS OF COLORADO WITHOUT MOISTURE OR DENSITY CONTROL. THIN-WALL PIPES HAVE BEEN PLACED IN CERTAIN FILLS FOR STUDIES OF MOISTURE AND DENSITY WITH NUCLEAR PROBES. INITIAL MOISTURE-DENSITY VALUES WERE DETERMINED BY CONVENTIONAL METHODS FROM THE INSIDE OF 36 INCH DIAMETER HOLES DRILLED DEEP INTO THE FILLS. MOISTURE AND DENSITY DATA WERE GATHERED ON TWO PROJECTS (NO REQUIREMENT FOR MOISTURE AND DENSITY CONTROL) DURING CONSTRUCTION SO THAT COMPARISONS COULD BE MADE. THE INFORMATION ASSEMBLED SO FAR SEEMS TO INDICATE THAT MOISTURE -DENSITY CONTROL DOES RESULT IN MORE UNIFORMITY OF THE FILLS, AND A UNIFORMLY STRONG FOUNDATION SEVERAL FEET BELOW THE PAVEMENT GENERALLY IS CONSIDERED ESSENTIAL FOR PERMANENT CONSTRUCTION.
