Unsealed road performance monitoring in New Zealand
The paper describes pilot studies carried out to adapt or develop techniques for monitoring road roughness, surface condition, wear loss and dust generation on unsealed roads under New Zealand conditions. These techniques have been applied in a suite of current research projects where the performance of unsealed roads will be monitored to establish the merits of alternative maintenance strategies. Early progress on this suite of projects is discussed together with a brief summary of the relevant overseas data which forms the background against which New Zealand observations will be considered (a).
