COMPACTION METHODS

THE ARTICLE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOST SUITABLE COMPACTING METHODS AND EQUIPMENT CONCENTRATING BASICALLY ON THE TYPES OF ROLLERS AND THE FREQUENCY OF PASSAGE. IN THE FIRST PART OF THE ARTICLE THE INFLUENCE OF COMPACTION ON THE PLANNING, COST AND DURATION OF SURFACING OPERATIONS IS ANALYZED. THE OBJECT OF THIS OPERATION IS THREEFOLD: TO INCREASE THE STRENGTH, VOLUMETRIC STABILITY AND MINIMUM PERMEABILITY OF THE MATERIAL IN SITU. THE AUTHOR ANALYZES THESE THREE FUNDAMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS AND INDICATES THE MOST SUITABLE MACHINERY AND ITS COST. THE SECOND PART DEALS WITH THE MOST MODERN EQUIPMENT USED IN THESE METHODS AND STUDIES THE FIVE MOST WIDELY USED TYPES: SHEEPSFOOT ROLLERS, ROLLERS ON PNEUMATIC TYRES, STEEL WHEELS, VIBRATORS AND GRID ROLLERS. THE BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF EACH OF THESE TYPES ARE MENTIONED, AS WELL AS THEIR ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES. FINALLY, A BRIEF ANALYSIS IS MADE OF THE INFLUENCE ON THE COMPACTION OF HUMIDITY, COMPACTING FORCE AND TEMPERATURE. /LTE/LCPC/RRL/
