A CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF THE EQUILIBRIUM OF DEEP FOUNDATIONS FREE AND HEADED, SUBJECTED TO HORIZONTAL LOADS. BEHAVIOUR OF A STIFF CLAY

A CONTRIBUTION IS GIVEN TOWARD THE DEVELOPMENT OF A METHOD FOR EVALUATING THE ADMISSIBLE HORIZONTAL FORCES ON THE HEAD OF DEEP FOUNDATIONS IN THE CASE OF A HOMOGENEOUS SOIL CONSTITUTED OF STIFF CLAY, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE DEFORMATIONS AND DISPLACEMENTS COMPATIBLE WITH CONDITIONS OF USE. THE HORIZONTAL LOADING OF PILES IS DICTATED BY THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS' /1/ THE RUPTURE OF PILES OR THE SUPERSTRUCTURE THEY SUPPORT MUST NOT TAKE PLACE UNDER THE MOST FAVORABLE LOADING CONDITIONS, /2/ DEFORMATION AND DISPLACEMENTS UNDER ADMISSIBLE LOADS MUST NEVER BE ENOUGH TO MAKE USE OF THE STRUCTURE UNSAFE. THE DESIGN OF THE PILE IS THEREFORE DICTATED BY THE ULTIMATE LATERAL RESISTANCE BEFORE RUPTURE OF THE FOUNDATION. FOR STRUCTURES SUBJECTED TO ONLY MINUTE DISPLACEMENT, DESIGN IS DICTATED BY THE DISPLACEMENT OF THE FOUNDATION UNDER THE LOADS APPLIED. DETERMINATION IS BEING MADE OF THE ULTIMATE LATERAL PRESSURE LIMIT OF THE SOIL BY SUPPOSING THAT THE FOUNDATION COULD BECOME SUFFICIENTLY DISPLACED TO MOVE THE ENTIRE BEARING, THUS PRODUCING A LATERAL RESISTANCE TO THE POINT OF RUPTURE.
