COLORADO SWELLING SOILS STUDY

EFFECTIVENESS OF SWELL PREVENTATIVE METHODS ON SEVERAL FORMERLY CONSTRUCTED COLORADO HIGHWAYS WAS EVALUATED. THE EVALUATION WAS PERFORMED BY OBTAINING A PRESENT SERVICEABILITY INDEX /PSI/, CORRECTED FOR CRACKING, USING THE BPR ROUGHOMETER AND THE CHLOE PROFILOMETER. PSI VALUES FOR TEST SECTIONS WERE COMPARED TO VALUES FOR ADJACENT CONTROL SECTIONS. SEVERAL CONCLUSIONS WERE REACHED REGARDING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF REMOVAL AND BACKFILLING, AND REMOVAL AND RECOMPACTION METHODS OF SWELL PREVENTION. A GENERAL RECOMMENDATION WAS MADE, CALLING FOR 4 FEET OF ADDITIONAL GRANULAR BACKFILL TO BE PLACED UNDER PAVEMENTS UNDERLAIN BY POTENTIALLY SWELLING SOILS. /BPR/
