MEASUREMENT OF DYNAMIC STRESS AND STRAIN IN AND UNDER ROAD CONSTRUCTIONS

A GENERAL INDICATION IS GIVEN OF THE TYPE OF RESEARCH BEING CONDUCTED AT THE BRITISH ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY CONCERNING RESPONSE OF A ROAD PAVEMENT SYSTEM TO TRAFFIC LOADS. THE EXTENSIVE TEST FACILITIES ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED. THE NEED TO OBTAIN MEASUREMENTS OF ACTUAL DYNAMIC STRESS AND STRAIN IN THE LAYERS OF MATERIAL SUPPORTING THE PAVEMENT IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A COMPARISON WITH AVAILABLE THEORIES IS STRESSED. STRESS AND STRAIN GAGES DEVELOPED BY THE LABORATORY FOR THIS PURPOSE ARE DESCRIBED. THE STRESS GAGE USES PIEZOELECTRIC TRANSDUCERS WHICH CAN MEASURE ONLY THE DYNAMIC COMPONENT OF STRESS. THE REVIEWER BELIEVES THAT THE GAGE CONFIGURATION MAKES IT SUITABLE ONLY FOR MEASUREMENT OF VERTICAL STRESS. THIS IS THE ONLY COMPONENT REPORTED; HOWEVER, THE AUTHORS STATE THAT THE GAGE CAN BE USED FOR HORIZONTAL STRESS, ALTHOUGH THEY ALSO STATE THAT THEY ARE DESIGNING A NEW GAGE FOR THIS PURPOSE AND HENCE IMPLY THAT THE PRESENT ONE IS UNSUITABLE. A SPECIAL GAGE USING BONDED FOIL STRAIN TRANSDUCERS FOR MEASURING STRAINS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE IS DESCRIBED. IN ADDITION, THERE IS ILLUSTRATED A SOIL STRAIN GAGE WHICH USES AN IRON CORE DIFFERENTIAL TRANSFORMER TO COUPLE TWO REFERENCE DISKS. IT IS REPORTED TO HAVE A SENSITIVITY OF 0.001 PER CENT STRAIN (10 MICRO IN/IN). THE PAPER IS VALUABLE AS A GENERAL STATUS REPORT. OTHER PAPERS AND REPORTS GIVEN AS REFERENCES ARE NEEDED TO OBTAIN THE TECHNICAL DETAIL. /AMR/
