GEOPHYSICAL MEASUREMENTS OF ROCK PROPERTIES IN SITU

EQUATIONS HAVE BEEN KNOWN FOR MANY YEARS THAT RELATE THE ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF ROCK IN PLACE AND THE SPEED OF TRAVEL OF ARTIFICIAL SEISMIC WAVES THROUGH THAT ROCK. THE IDEA OF MEASURING QUANTITATIVELY AND IN SITU THE ELASTIC MODULUS OF A MAJOR PORTION OF THE ABUTMENT OF A DAM BY MEASURING THE VELOCITY OF SEISMIC WAVES IN AND THROUGH THE ABUTMENT WAS FIRST PUT INTO PRACTICE IN THIS COUNTRY IN 1954 BY THE U.S. BUREAU OF RECLAMATION. THIS INITIAL TEST WAS MADE AT THE MONTICELLO DAM, CALIFORNIA. SIMILAR FIELD DETERMINATIONS OF THE ELASTICITY OF ROCK IN PLACE HAVE BEEN MADE AT THE OTHER PROJECTS. THE ELASTIC MODULUS AND THE POISSON'S RATIO ARE TWO PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF ROCK USED BY DESIGN ENGINEERS TO EVALUATE THE ANTICIPATED DEFORMATION OF A DAM FOUNDATION. ACCURATE INFORMATION ON ABUTMENT DEFORMATION PERMITS MORE PRECISE ANALYSIS OF STRESS DISTRIBUTION IN THE DAM AND FOUNDATION, WITH A RESULTANT INCREASE IN SAFETY AND ECONOMY OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS. CONTROLLED COMPARISONS WERE ESTABLISHED BETWEEN THE VALUES OF THE ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF ROCK OBTAINED FROM SEISMIC FIELD MEASUREMENTS OF WAVE VELOCITY AND JACK LOADING TESTS IN EXPLORATION TUNNELS, AND LABORATORY TESTS OF CORES. /AUTHOR/
