ENGINEERING CLASSIFICATION OF GEOLOGICAL MATERIALS AND RELATED SOILS

A GEOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM APPROPRIATE FOR PERSONS ENGAGED IN HIGHWAY DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT, AND ENGINEERING IS GIVEN. THE AREA DESCRIBED IS THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF OKLAHOMA. AFTER AN INTRODUCTION TO BASIC PRINCIPLES AND NOMENCLATURE OF GEOLOGY, THE REPORT ADDRESSES ITSELF FIRST TO ROCK AND SHALE AND THEN TO SOILS, IN BOTH CASES PROCEEDING COUNTY BY COUNTY. IN THE FIRST SECTION, GEOLOGIC MATERIALS ARE GROUPED INTO "GEOLOGIC UNITS" RATHER THAN CLASSIFIED BY AGE OR FORMATION. EACH UNIT REPRESENTS A SPECIFIC COUNTY LOCALE, IS BROKEN DOWN INTO CONSOLIDATED AND UNCONSOLIDATED MATERIALS, AND IS RELATED TO ITS ENGINEERING CHARACTERISTICS. THE SECOND SECTION FRIST TREATS SOILS FROM THE STANDPOINT OF TOPOGRAPHIC POSITION, ASSOCIATION, AND GEOLOGIC SUBSTRATUM; THEN DESCRIBED EACH SOIL AT LENGTH; AND FINALLY LISTS THE ENGINEERING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SOIL SERIES.
