RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF ORGANIC CLAYS

CORRELATIONS WERE OBTAINED BETWEEN VELOCITY AND RESISTANCE TO SHEAR STRESS OF ORGANIC CLAYS FOR THE DESIGN OF DREDGING WORKS. THIN WALL SAMPLERS WERE USED TO OBTAIN SAMPLES. VISCOSITY DETERMINATIONS WERE OBTAINED WITH STORMER VISCOMETERS AND DENSITY WAS VERIFIED BY A MOHR SCALE. RESISTANCE TO SHEAR STRESS WAS OBTAINED FROM THE VANE SHEAR TEST. VARIATION OF VISCOSITY WITH THE HUMIDITY RATIO OF ORGANIC CLAYS WAS STUDIED. CORRELATION OF THE SHEAR STRESS (VANE SHEAR TEST) WITH THE HUMIDITY RATIO WAS ATTEMPTED. WITH THE HUMIDITY RATIO OF AN ORGANIC CLAY KNOWN, THE COHESION OR SHEAR STRESS CAN BE DETERMINED USING OBTAINED CORRELATIONS. WITH THE KNOWN HUMIDITY RATIO, COHESION AND GRADING OF THE ORGANIC CLAY, AND USING THE RESEARCH CORRELATIONS, THE VISCOSITY INDEX CAN BE DETERMINED. THE CORRELATIONS BETWEEN VISCOSITY AND COHESION ALLOW THE DETERMINATION OF THE LIMIT VALUES OF THE SHEAR STRESS BEYOND WHICH THE ORGANIC CLAY DOES NOT PRESENT ITSELF IN FLUID STATE.
