DESIGN OF A SANITARY LANDFILL LABORATORY LYSIMETER

THE DETAILED DESIGN, INSTALLATION AND ACTIVATION ARE DESCRIBED OF THE LABORATORY LYSIMETER BEING USED TO STUDY SANITARY LANDFILLS AS POLLUTION GENERATORS. THE PURPOSE OF THE LYSIMETER IS TO FUNCTION AS A POLLUTION GENERATOR UNDER CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS. IT IS USED TO GAIN BASIC PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL DATA WHICH WILL BE ANALYZED TO OBTAIN A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE BEHAVIOR CHARACTERISTIC OF SANITARY LANDFILLS. THE LYSIMETER SIMULATES THE CENTER OF AN EIGHT-FOOT-THICK (AT TIME OF PLACEMENT) SANITARY LANDFILL COVERED WITH A TWO-FOOT-THICK SOIL LAYER. THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS PRODUCED IN THE LYSIMETER REPRESENT CLIMATIC CONDITIONS COMMON TO SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA FOR A LANDFILL LOCATED ABOVE MICACEOUS GRANITE GNEISS BEDROCK IN SOILS DERIVED FROM IT.
