THE LABORATORY MEASUREMENT OF SOIL AND ROCK PERMEABILITY

THE PRINCIPAL LABORATORY METHODS OF MEASURING THE GAS AND LIQUID PERMEABILITY OF EARTH MATERIALS ARE EXAMINED. SAMPLING PROCEDURES ARE DESCRIBED WHICH, IF FOLLOWED CLOSELY, WILL ENSURE THAT THE TEST RESULTS ARE ACCURATE AND FULLY REPRESENTATIVE OF THE FORMATION UNDER STUDY. THE DIFFERENT UNITS OF PERMEABILITY, ABOUT WHICH THERE HAS BEEN MUCH DISCUSSION IN THE SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE, ARE EXPLAINED AND A TABLE OF CONVERSION FACTORS PROVIDED. A NEW RESTING SYSTEM SUITABLE FOR MEASURING THE WATER PERMEABILITY OF SOFT, HIGHLY PERMEABLE SANDSTONES UNDER STERILE CONDITIONS IS BRIEFLY DESCRIBED. THIS SYSTEM WAS SPECIALLY DESIGNED TO ENABLE THE CORRELATION OF PERMEABILITY VALUES OBTAINED BY LABORATORY AND PUMP-TEST METHODS TO BE CARRIED OUT. /RRL(A)/
