A GAMMA RAY SCATTERING DENSITY PROBE DESIGNED FOR FOUNDATION EXPLORATION IN LOESS DEVELOPMENT

A GAMMA RAY SCATTERING DENSITY PROBE FOR USE IN FOUNDATION EXPLORATION IN LOESS WAS DEVELOPED. THE PRINCIPLE OF DENSITY MEASUREMENT BY GAMMA RAY SCATTERING IS WELL-KNOWN, BUT THIS PROBE WAS DEVELOPED TO SUIT CERTAIN LOCAL CONDITIONS: IT WAS SPECIFIED FOR USE IN A 4 OR 5 INCH DRILLED HOLE IN LOESS WITHOUT CASING, AND SHOULD BE ACCURATE UNDER THE REAL FIELD CONDITIONS. THE CAUSES OF INACCURACY, AND THE DESIGN OF THE PROBE WITH A VIEW TO MINIMIZING THE EFFECTS OF THESE, ARE DISCUSSED. THE PROBE WAS CHECKED AND FOUND TO GIVE REPRODUCIBLE RESULTS TO WITHIN 1%. /RRL(A)/
