INSTRUMENTATION OF EARTH AND ROCKFILL DAMS

PORE-PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS, THEIR DEVELOPMENT AND THE MEASUREMENT OF EARTH PRESSURES AND INTERNAL DEFORMATIONS IN DAMS ARE DISCUSSED. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE RESULTS FROM INSTRUMENTS CAN BE USED TO CHECK ON DESIGN ASSUMPTIONS AND BECOME INDISPENSABLE WHEN USED FOR DESIGN DURING CONSTRUCTION, A METHOD APPLICABLE TO EARTH AND ROCKFILL DAMS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT RELIABLE INSTRUMENTS ARE NOW AVAILABLE WHICH, AT A COST OF 1-2 PER CENT OF THE DAM, CAN PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE BEHAVIOR OF THE CONSTRUCTION SO THAT IT CAN BE MODIFIED IF NECESSARY TO EFFECT ECONOMIES OR EXCESSIVE DEFORMATION. /RRL/
