STONE WALLING

A FIELD OF APPLICATION FOR NATURAL STONE, PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT FOR THE TOTAL PICTURE OF ROADS, IS DISCUSSED IN 8 ARTICLES; ITS USE AS A LINING MATERIAL FOR RETAINING AND SUPPORTING WALLS, BRIDGES, PIERS, PARAPETS AND STEPS. SEEN FROM THE SPECIALIST VIEWPOINT THE FACT THAT SPEAKS MOST OF ALL IN THE AUTHOR'S OPINION FOR THE USE OF NATURAL STONE IN THE SAID FIELDS IS THAT NATURAL ROCK, AS PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE HAS TAUGHT, IS MUCH LESS SENSITIVE TO MECHANICAL ATTACK AND HAS A LONGER LIFE; FOR EXAMPLE, IN RIVER-BANK SUPPORTING WALLS. SUCH CONSIDERATIONS WOULD APPEAR TO JUSTIFY A CERTAIN COST INCREASE. PROFESSOR ALWIN SEIFERT IS CITED AS A VALUED CO-WORKER ON THE BOOK. /FG/RRL/
