APPARATUS FOR TAKING UNDISTURBED SOIL SAMPLES FOR GEOPHYSICAL MEASUREMENTS

TO CARRY OUT A RESEARCH PROGRAM, ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE MEASUREMENTS ON UNDISTURBED SOIL SAMPLES ARE NECESSARY. SOIL SAMPLES IN THE USUAL STEEL CYLINDER ARE UNSUITABLE FOR THIS. CONTAINERS MADE OF INSULATING MATERIAL WERE DEVELOPED FOR THE SOIL SAMPLES. PVC PIPES WITH INTERRUPTED - SCREW-TYPE BREECH BLOCKS ON BOTH SIDES ARE INSERTED CENTRALLY INTO A STEEL CYLINDER EQUIPPED WITH A CUTTING EDGE. THE CENTERING IS ACHIEVED ON THE UPPER END BY MEANS OF A SUPPORT WHICH CAN WHICH CAN BE SCREWED IN PLACE, AND ON THE LOWER END BY ADAPTING THE CONICAL END OF THE CANISTER TO A CORRESPONDING COUNTERPART IN THE STEEL CYLINDER. THE STEEL CYLINDER HAS A LID WITH OPENINGS IN IT TO ALLOW THE AIR CONTAINED IN THE BOX TO ESCAPE. THE SAMPLING TAKES PLACE JUST AS IN NORMAL APPARATUS. THE COATING OF THE PVC BOX HAS BOREHOLES IN IT, THROUGH WHICH THE POTENTIAL SOUNDING DEVICES CAN BE INTRODUCED INTO THE SAMPLE OF MATERIAL. DURING THE TAKING AND POSITIONING OF THE SAMPLES THESE BOREHOLES ARE SEALED WITH INSULATION TAPE. /RRL/
