DEPOSITS AND LATERITIC SOILS

THE WORK INCLUDES STUDIES OF AVAILABLE NATURAL DEPOSITS LOCATED AT RECONCAVO BAIANO, WHICH ARE COMPOSED MOSTLY OF SANDY SOILS, WITH RELATIVE ABSENCE OF COARSE AGGREGATES. FOUR TYPES ARE CLASSIFIED, SUCH AS: LATERITIES, SAND DEPOSITS, INCLUDING AN APPRAISAL OF THEIR CAPACITIES AND LOCATION ARE PRESENTED. THE WORK EMPHASIZES THE STUDY OF THE DEPOSITS ABUNDANT IN THE REGION, FORMED BY SOILS THAT DO NOT COMPLETELY SATISFY THE AASHO REQUIREMENTS FOR BASIC SOILS. CONCLUSIONS ARE SUBMITTED REFERRING TO (1) COARSE AGGREGATES WHICH WHEN CRUSHED MANY TIMES RESULT IN FRAGMENTS TENDING TO THE LAMELLAR STRUCTURE, (2) THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE "SAND DEPOSITS" USED AS FINE AGGREGATES, IN WHICH SAND IS USALLY BADLY GRADED, (3) THE LATERITIC DEPOSITS ARE NOT VERY DEEP, (4) THE SANDY NOT PLASTIC SOILS ARE MOSTLY FORMED BY THE SOILS A-1-B AND A-3, AND (5) THE SANDY LAYERS OF LOW PLASTICITY GENERALLY FIT THEMSELVES IN THE STRIPS E AND F OF AASHO, BEING VERY SENSITIVE TO THE INFLUENCE OF THE COMPACTION EFFORT HUMIDITY RATIO AND GRADING. RIGOROUS GEOTECHNICAL CONTROL IS RECOMMENDED. /RRL/
