IDENTIFICATION OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS IN THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT BY ABSORPTION SPECTROPHOTOMETRY

The ultraviolet absorption spectra of a variety of petroleum products, including distillate and residual fuel oils and lubricating oils, are examined. Results suggest a basis for an analytical procedure which may be useful for the identification of oil spills. The application of this method to the identification of the origin of oils found recently in the marine environment of Eastern Canada is discussed.
