A STUDY OF VANE SHEAR METHOD OF DETERMINING LIQUID LIMIT

THE LIQUID LIMIT AS DEFINED BY ATTERBERG HAS BEEN USED FOR CLASSIFICATION OF SOILS. CASAGRANDES LIQUID LIMIT DEVICE AS PROPOSED IN 1922 IS THE STANDARD TEST FOR FINDING THE LIQUID LIMIT OF SOILS EVEN TODAY. CASAGRANDE LATER ON SUGGESTED REPLACING THE TEST BY A SIMPLE SHEAR STRENGTH MEASURING DEVICE SUCH AS CONE-PENETROMETER OR VANE APPARATUS SINCE THE LIQUID-LIMIT DEVICE HAS NOT BEEN FOUND TO PROVIDE UNIFORM BASIS FOR CLASSIFYING THE CLAYEST SOILS. ON THE BASIS OF THE ABOVE SUGGESTION THE VANE-SHEAR TEST HAS BEEN STUDIED FOR FINDING THE LIQUID-LIMIT. THE BASIS FOR ADOPTION OF THIS TEST IS THE VANE-SHEAR STRENGTH OF THE SOIL WHICH IS THE UNDRAINED STRENGTH AT LIQUID LIMIT. IT HAS BEEN FOUND THAT THE VANE-SHEAR STRENGTH IS CONSTANT AT LIQUID LIMIT AND IS THE SAME FOR ALL OF THE SOILS. THE VANE-SHEAR STRENGTH AND THE LIQUID LIMIT HAVE BEEN DETERMINED FOR 40 SOILS. A SIMPLE CORRELATION HAS BEEN DEVELOPED BETWEEN THE TWO. THE VANE-METHOD HAS BEEN FURTHER SIMPLIFIED TO ONE POINT METHOD AND THE RELATION HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR THE LIQUID LIMIT IN TERMS OF MOISTURE CONTENT AND VANE-SHEAR STRENGTH. THE CORRECTION FACTORS FOR ONE-POINT METHOD HAVE ALSO BEEN CALCULATED. /CRRI/
