LOAD CELLS FOR MEASURING THE BASE LOADS IN BORED PILES AND CYLINDER FOUNDATIONS

A PROTOTYPE LOAD CELL WAS DESIGNED THAT IS REMOTE-READING, GIVES THE TOTAL LOAD ACROSS THE SECTION OF THE PILE WHERE IT IS INTRODUCED, THE RESPONSE IS WITHOUT HYSTERESIS, IT IS COMPARABLE IN STIFFNESS WITH THE PORTION OF THE PILE IT REPLACES, EASILY INSTALLED, DURABLE, CHEAP, GIVES A TRUE READING OF A VERTICAL LOAD APPLIED ECCENTRICALLY AND WITHSTANDS HORIZONTAL SHEAR. WHEN THE PROTOTYPE LOAD CELL SATISFIED THESE REQUIREMENTS, 12 CELLS WERE CONSTRUCTED OF A 200 TON LOAD CAPACITY. CALCULATION OF THE CALIBRATION FACTOR IS DESCRIBED. THE BEHAVIOR OF THE LOAD CELLS WERE EVALUATED AFTER FITTINGS WERE DESIGNED FOR HANDLING THE CELLS, EXCLUDING WATER FROM THE CELLS, FIXING STRAIN GAGES AND WIRING AND CALIBRATION.
