SIMPLIFIED LIQUID LIMIT DETERMINATION ON COHESIVE SOIL TYPES FOR ENGINEERING-GEOLOGICAL-SOIL MECHANICAL STUDIES

USING THE FREIBERG CONE APPARATUS, A VERY REFINED MEASURING DEVICE WHICH WAS DEVELOPED WITH REFERENCE TO THE SWEDISH CONE TEST, IT IS POSSIBLE TO CARRY OUT A SATISFACTORY QUICK TEST, WHERE SUBJECTIVE ERRORS ARE ALMOST EXCLUDED. THE SPECIAL ADVANTAGES OF THIS APPARATUS AS OPPOSED TO THE EXISTING CASAGRANDE APPARATUS ARE APPARENT DURING TESTS ON FINE SAND. A GREATER DIVERGENCE OF RESULTS IS POSSIBLE WHEN THE LIQUID LEVELS ARE HIGH. DETAILED COMPARATIVE TESTS ON MUNEROUS SOIL SAMPLES ILLUSTRATE THE USEFULNESS OF THE APPARATUS. FURTHERMORE, A SINGLE-POINT METHOD WITH THE CASAGRANDE APPARATUS IS DESCRIBED, WHICH ENABLES ONE TO OBTAIN QUICK TEST RESULTS. IF THE LIQUID LEVELS ARE HIGH THIS METHOD IS NOT SATISFACTORY. /RRL/
