EVALUATION OF COMMERCIAL SOIL PRESSURE CELLS

THE INSTALLATION AND PERFORMANCE OF SEVERAL MAKES OF COMMERCIAL SOIL PRESSURE CELLS ARE REPORTED. THE CELLS VARIED IN SIZE AND TRANSDUCER TYPE AND WERE INSTALLED AT A DEPTH OF ABOUT 70 FEET AT THREE SITES IN EMBANKMENTS. VERTICAL PRESSURE ONLY WAS MEASURED. ONE MAKE OF CELL FAILED DUE TO A SEALING PROBLEM. HOWEVER, IT WAS A FIRST-RUN PRODUCT AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NEW TO THE FIELD. THE OTHER PRESSURE CELLS ARE PROVIDING STABLE READINGS. EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON THE VALUE OF PROPER SPECIFICATIONS AND ACCEPTANCE TESTING. IT WAS FELT THAT AN AVERAGE OF READINGS OF SEVERAL CELLS WAS NECESSARY TO PROVIDE AN ACCURATE INDICATION OF PRESSURE AT A GIVEN SITE. CONTINUED READINGS WILL PROVIDE DATA ON LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE. /AUTHOR/
