AL1201540 PPLICATION OF GRAVITY AND INTERVENING OPPORTUNITIES MODELS TO RECREATIONAL TRAVEL IN KENTUCKY

THE OBJECTIVE IS TO DEVELOP A METHOD OF MODELLING OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL TRAVEL IN ORDER TO PREDICT FUTURE TRAVEL PATTERNS. IN GENERL, OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL TRAVEL MODELS DO NOT NEED TO CONSIDER MODAL SPLIT SINCE ALMOST ALL TRAVEL TO AND FROM THESE AREAS IS BY AUTOMOBILE. A CAUSE-EFFECT RELATIONSHIP CAN BE DETERMINED BY QUANTIFYING (1) THE FACTORS THAT GIVE RESIDENTS OF AN ORIGIN ZONE A PROPENSITY FOR OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL TRAVEL, (2) THE COST OF SUCH TRAVEL (USUALLY EXPRESSED AS DISTANCE), AND (3) THE CHARACTERISTICS OF AN OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL AREA WHICH ATTRACT VISITORS.
